Aceh, which is pronounced "AH-CHEY," is Sumatra's most northern province. Its highland region, located around Lake Tawar and the capital city of Takengon, is regarded as the center of one of the most distinctive coffee terroirs in the entire world. The management of the coffee farms in this region draws on the knowledge gained from many generations of cultivation, and they are seamlessly integrated into the surrounding tropical forests. The fields are nearly impenetrably thick with coffee plants, fruit trees, and vegetables—all of which are perpetually flushing with new growth—under loud canopies. The region is covered in year-round mists and rain showers, the farm floors are soft and thick with layered biomass, and nearly every square meter seems to be drenched in life.
